After witnessing the execution of two former members of the French Militia in June 1953, two journalists decided to find high government officials from Marshal Pétain's regime in France from 1940 to 1944. This investigation never really took place; it is a fictional recreation which makes it possible to interrogate some of the leaders of the Vichy government who have since passed away. Their dialogue is based on their own writings, trial records and eye-witness accounts, and is illustrated by authentic period footage as well as fictional reconstructions of life in Vichy between 1940 and 1944. The film evokes one of the darkest periods in French political history.
