The Truth Commission • Presentation
Turning South Africa into a truly democratic society is the aspiration of the «Truth and Reconciliation Commission» set up by Nelson Mandela. Comprised of seventeen members and presided by Desmond Tutu, the Commission operates simultaneously all over the country through local «Khulumani» groups («khulumani» means «speak out» in Zulu). For over a year the Commission hears the testimonies of victims, torturers and witnesses of apartheid in an attempt to reveal the truth about the past. The film-makers have permission to follow every step of this incredible process whose aim is rebuilding the South African nation. The film focuses on the Commission itself, which it treats as a collective character that must grapple with ethical, political and philosophical issues, as well as on a handful of other characters --victims and torturers alike-- who share the same history. We follow them in their questioning and as they take steps to link the past with a possible future.
