Public Enemy • Presentation ![]() Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph and Nile Rodgers are now between 50 and 60 years old. They were members of the Black Panthers, ‘the greatest internal threat to the country’s security’ according to J. Edgar Hoover, the irremovable head of the FBI, who was notorious for his virulent racism. The Black Panther party was founded in October 1966. It united various Black liberation movements and based its political platform on the ideas of Malcolm X, who was assassinated in 1965. The Black Panthers attempted to organize, and above all, politicize the anger of black youth in the ghettos. Although their membership was limited, during a short time period they exercised tremendous influence. The movement came to an end in 1971, cracking under the enormous pressure of FBI persecution and in-fighting. Interspersed with footage from the fiery sixties, the film affectionately follows these four survivors, who try in their own very different ways to remain true to themselves and their memories.
